Green Sunday! This Sunday, November 28, is the first Sunday of Advent. It is also the day we “hang the green” to mark the beginning of our season of anticipation. We will light the candle of Hope, the first candle of Advent. The Scriptures we hear will remind us of how the prophets of long ago lived on hope for a better day. We will also hear from Paul’s letter to the Christians in Rome, who were desperately in need of a word of hope as they lived out their witness for Christ in fear of capture each day. And, finally, we will hear what Jesus has to say about what readiness has to do with hope.
One of my favorite quotes about hope is from Emily Dickinson, who wrote,
Hope is that thing with feathers that perches in the soul and sings the tune without the words and never stops... at all.
What we are invited to do tomorrow is to be still and quiet enough to hear that tune that never ends.
